Alex Da-Corte Biography

Alex Da Corte is a contemporary American artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and video. Born in 1980 in Camden, New Jersey, Da Corte has established himself as a vibrant force in the art world, known for his pop-informed sensibility, embrace of theatricality, and the creation of immersive environments that challenge and engage the viewer. Da Corte's early life was split between the United States and Venezuela, which provided him with a rich cultural backdrop that continues to influence his work. He returned to the United States for his education, where he pursued his passion for art. He studied at various institutions, including Camden County College and Barnstone Studios, before completing his BFA in Printmaking/Fine Arts at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2004. His education continued at the prestigious Yale University, where he earned an MFA in 2010. The artist's work is characterized by its use of everyday objects and consumer goods, which serve as both actors and props in his elaborate, surreal set pieces. Da Corte's installations are campy détournements staged in immersive environments that transform familiar references into something strange and new. His videos, sculptures, paintings, and installations ruminate on personal and cultural politics, alienation, and the complexities of the human experience. Da Corte's career has been marked by numerous solo and group exhibitions at key galleries and museums around the world. His first survey exhibition, "Free Roses," was held at MASS MoCA in North Adams in 2016, and he has had other notable solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Secession Building in Vienna, Austria, the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Denmark, and the Art + Practice, Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. His work has been included in major art events like the Venice Biennale and the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh. In addition to his solo work, Da Corte has engaged in several collaborative projects with other visual artists, writers, and musicians, including Jayson Musson, Dev Hynes, Sam McKinniss, and Annie Clark. These collaborations have resulted in works like "Easternsports" (2014), a two-and-a-half-hour atmospheric video created with Musson and scored by Hynes. Da Corte's work has been recognized and featured in numerous publications and has been the subject of critical acclaim. His pieces have been collected by prestigious institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2021, he was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's roof garden commission, where he created a kinetic sculpture that drew inspiration from the work of Italian writer Italo Calvino. One of Da Corte's masterpieces, "Rubber Pencil Devil," is a two-hour and forty-minute-long film composed of 57 short films, which was displayed at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. The work is a testament to his ability to connect our sense of self and identity to our consumer culture, binding existential weight to the seemingly innocent aspects of our lives. Da Corte's exhibitions are typically characterized by their bright colors, neon lighting, and distinctive scents, creating a parallel reality for viewers to step into. His works often possess a duality of remarkable gloom and sadness while simultaneously exuding something effortless, playful, and light. Throughout his career, Da Corte has continued to explore the psychological complexities and humorous absurdities of late capitalism, often drawing from the imagery of American high and low culture. His practice examines the nuances of contemporary life, reimagining the familiar in wholly unexpected ways and inviting viewers to reconsider the world around them through his unique artistic lens.
